Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder strive to improve quality, efficiency and consistency and are evidence based. References include but are not limited to American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Bipolar Disorder, 1994 and Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Practice Parameters for the Assessment and Treatment of Children and Adolescents with Bipolar Disorder, 1997. Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia, which are evidenced based, are written in outline form and contain information on the mental status exam, medication management and managing side effects of medication, recommendation for periodic AIMS testing to assess long term side effects of neuroleptics used to treat thought disorders and recommendations for family therapy.
